PRIVATE BANGALOW

Kottayam,Kerala.

Client: Devaraj & Mini

Area : 4200 sq.ft

Year  : 2016

Photography : AmitRastogi

Background: The site for this residence-to house a family of five-was located on the lower end of the sloping terrain and thus prone to water logging every year. It was hence decided to house the main living spaces on a raised structure and provide car parking (for 6 cars) on the ground level.

Design Approach: Ramps were provided to enable easy access to the raised spaces. Once inside, the open-plan design approach is carried throughout the house by way of skylights, courtyards, double-height spaces and other semi-open spaces.

Tropical design principles are employed effectively; ample natural light and ventilation fill the interiors and make every space a joy to inhabit & spend time in. Semi-open spaces and open planning in the interiors enable visual connectivity throughout the house, but also provide sufficient privacy where needed. These semi-open spaces also serve as interaction spaces within the house – effectively creating a ‘micro-climate' that is much more comfortable than the exterior, even while requiring very less energy use.

Natural material finishes such as wood & stone are used in harmony with modern elements like glass, steel & concrete -traditional & vernacular principles of house planning applied in a modern context.
